Campaigning is at the heart of what local councillors should be doing. That and listening to local views on issues and matters that affect their constituents.
In Wingerworth the hot topic at the moment is the appalling treatment handed out to residents by the planning system relating to the development all around the village. Failed by North East Derbyshire whose own Local Plan is no where near complete. This is a theme right across North East Derbyshire at the moment and only Conservatives can fix it. This is one issue I won't let go and must be tackled.
I will support the communities right across my Division and Wards to push back against innapropriate planning applications and apply pressure on NEDDC to get their house in order.
The reason is NNPF, which saw the simplification of the planning system, which was needed but not at the cost of countryside. The issue is a 'presumption in favour of sustainable devlopment' which works, IF the local authority has a Local Plan in force with a robust 5 years housing land supply in place. Unfortunately Labour controlled North East Derbyshire has not.
It is not about being against all development. It is about working with communities and councils to decide where it should go. Indeed, properly done we can meet the communities. younger local people and families who want to remain in their communities.
I am keen to hear about local problems with our highways, pavements and footpaths - ensuring that our means of getting about are good quality and accessible where possible. We have reversed the cuts made by Labour locally. Labour had cut spending in all these areas, alienated volunteers that support our footpaths network, all whilst the Government has given them additional money. We are working hard to fix potholes and we have invested a record amount of money to get them fixed.
